About the Coalition

The Net Rights Coalition (NRC) is a coalition of Internet freedom activists sharing knowledge and experiences to combat digital rights threats. This group started as a Working Group to produce a Digital Rights and Freedom Bill for Nigeria and work towards passage into law. It is now a pan-African coalition for digital rights. The NRC advocates for the protection of digital rights in Africa through press statements, open letters, policy briefs, policy dialogues and any other responses that best address emerging infractions. The Net Rights Coalition mailing list has over 385 active subscribers who are civil society actors, technologists, researchers and media practitioners who are digital rights advocates across the African Continent. Paradigm Initiative (PIN) serves as the secretariat for the coalition and maintains the mailing list. The secretariat shares digital rights updates and opportunities with the coalition and convenes learning calls once every three months. Through learning calls and responses to emerging digital rights violations, the coalition members enhance their ability to respond to digital rights violations, increase their networks and jointly respond to emerging issues.

Since 2014, the NRC, a coalition of Internet freedom activists sharing knowledge and experiences to combat digital rights threats, has been advocating for the protection of digital rights in Africa. Through its programmes and initiatives, the NRC hosts learning calls, initiates press statements, open letters, policy briefs, policy dialogues and any other responses that best address emerging infractions. The NRC advocates for digital rights protection in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Our collective efforts manifest through various interventions, which include issuing press statements, open letters, and engaging in constructive policy dialogues to address emerging infractions and shape a more rights-respecting digital landscape in the Global South.

Through the NRC, the following successes have been achieved:

  • Production of the first-ever Digital Rights and Freedom Bill in Nigeria
  • Increased solidarity among members in responding to digital rights infractions in South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Mauritius, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Zimbabwe and Malawi.
  • Lifting of the ban on social media in South Sudan by the National Communications Authority
  • Increased access to policy developments and opportunities in the digital rights and inclusion ecosystem by members
  • Increased awareness of members through quarterly knowledge-sharing platforms.

NRC members receive bi-monthly updates directly to their inbox, providing timely information on important events, research, digital policy and rights developments, and relevant opportunities within the digital rights and inclusion ecosystem.

A resilient pan-African coalition promoting and defending digital rights in Africa.
