Digital Policy Engagement Series, Cameroon
Over the past decade, Cameroon has experienced a complex digital governance environment shaped by political tensions, security concerns, and increasing state control over information flows. The post-election context in Cameroon continues to raise concerns about the protection of digital rights, particularly regarding freedom of expression, access to information, and privacy.
One of the most emblematic cases remains the prolonged internet shutdowns in the Anglophone regions between 2017 and 2018, which disrupted economic activity, limited civic participation, and restricted access to information. These actions highlighted structural weaknesses in legal safeguards against arbitrary digital rights restrictions and raised important questions about accountability mechanisms.
